New lifts for Meribel and Mottaret

Construction begins this summer on phase 1 of a new Plattières gondola, the main lift from Mottaret’s towards Les Menuires and Val Thorens. This single lift will replace the existing Plattières I and II lifts for the start of the 2012/13 season. (For the 2011/12 season the existing lift will continue to run). The future gondola will have a capacity of 2700 passengers per hour, giving access to the top of Plattières II in just 9 minutes compared with the current 25 minutes. Comfort will increase as well as speed: comfortable 8-seat cabins will replace the small, back-to-back, 6-seat cabins.

In addition, Méribel’s other lift company, Méribel Alpina, is starting work on its new gondola lift. The Saulire Express will replace the existing Saulire gondola. A new, fast 8-man gondola lift will be installed over the next two summers, cutting travel time from around 20 minutes to 12 minutes. This new lift will arrive at the same point as the Courchevel Saulire cable car, making access on foot between the two resorts much easier. The top half will be installed this summer and the lower half will be installed the following summer in time for the 2012/13 winter season.
